Business Description:
About Genesis Adventures
The Genesis Genesis - After a 15-year
career in the high-tech industry, I was looking for a new challenge and
lifestyle. I grew tired of sitting inside an office watching beautiful,
sunny days pass by. I had my MBA and lots of business experience and
over the years had thought of several ideas for starting new
businesses, but none of them seemed to capture my passion for sports.
My athletic career started early on with swimming and cross-country
running and continued through high school. I swam Division I at
Northeastern University in Boston. After an extended hiatus from
competitive sports, I started training and competing in sprint
triathlons. It was during this time that a friend told me about
adventure racing and I tried my first event in 1999 - I was hooked! The
following year two buddies of mine (Dave Giampietro & Steve Vadas)
raced together and took third at the sprint National Championships in
the male division. We had a dream to race as much as possible so we
hunted around for sponsorship that winter so we could race nationally
and often. A Brand Manager at Diageo took an interest and Team Guinness
was born. In 2001 & 2002 Team Guinness competed nationally in the
Hi-Tec & Balance Bar Adventure Racing Series. The experience of
traveling around, meeting athletes and seeing companies that made their
living by running sports events allowed the pieces to fall into place. Genesis Adventures was formed in October 2001 and we held a one-day
clinic to teach others about adventure racing. 18 people attended that
first camp and we all had a great time. I then decided that I would run
a few small races in 2002 as a part-time gig while keeping my full-time
job. This plan soon changed. A group in Oregon that wanted a weekend
adventure racing camp contacted me. I had a friend in Oregon (Thanks
Teri!) so I said yes and flew out in the Spring of 2002. We spent a
full day kayaking, mountain biking and hiking around Mt. Hood, then
held a mini race on Sunday. As I flew home I made up my mind that I
wanted nothing more than to do this full time. I quit my job the next
day and started working on my new career, Genesis Adventures. We held
four races in 2002, nine in 2003, added our 24-hour mountain bike event
in 2004, and added triathlons and the Westchester Marathon in 2005. The name Genesis was derived from it's meaning of a "new beginning" as
it was a new start for me. Today, the spirit and purpose of the company
is to give people new experiences to challenge themselves. We have many
great sponsors who have helped us achieve these goals along the way. To
date, we have taught over 250 people in our training camps and hosted
over 6,000 athletes at 50+ events. We're looking forward to the future
as we continue to help all aspiring and seasoned athletes achieve their
goals and celebrate their accomplishments.
