I started competing in adventure races about 5 years ago. I paired up with a friend, Bryan Shipley, who shared an interest in mountain biking, skiing and adventure. We got his brother, Jason Shipley, into the mix and have competed in several races together.
The sense of "flow" when you're flying through the woods, the satisfaction from finishing a tough race, and not feeling guilty about cracking open a beer when its all over.
I hope to step up to some longer races. I'm doing the Ragnar Relay with a group of friends - 180 miles from Cumberland, Maryland to DC. Should be fun, but want to find that next big A.R.
2 defining moments come to mind. One was finishing the 50 mile Yough Extreme which was a decent step up from the 20-30 sprint races i'd done. The other was racing on consecutive days and winning the first and then winning our division the next day on tired legs (not to mention playing 9 holes of golf between the 2 races!).
