Delian Asparouhov is a sophomore year at MIT and currently working on a healthcare startup. This last summer he worked at Square, and in his freshman year he worked on a startup in the music industry known as FanFuser. He is currently in the running for the Thiel 20 under 20 fellowship as a semifinalist. In high school, Delian worked on a variety of robotics and electrical engineering projects. He is passionate about the intersection of technology and healthcare. He is currently planning on moving to California in June to work on his startup.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. DCR Plans Destruction Of Hundreds Of Healthy Mature Trees On Memorial Drive, Along The Charles River In Cambridge
Mass State Department of Conservatopn and Recreation is progressing with it's plans to destroy HUNDREDS of healthy mature trees along Memorial Dr in Cambridge MA. Marilyn Wellons of CIPAPA and Friends of the White Geese is not your "ordinary" tree hugger. She has attended most, if not all meetings held by the DCR in their vain attempt to garner public support for their destructive policies. Not only has the DCR failed to get the public support it desired, but thousands have writen, signed petitions, and just plain voiced negative opinions during public testimony at pubmic meetings. Still, the DCR buldozes ahead, I am not exagerating, with the development of this precious riverfront resource.
Here is an exerpt from Marilyn's recent letter to the Cambridge Conservation Commission:
"In addition to protecting water quality, the Wetlands Protection Act, WPA, charges the Commission with protection of all habitat in wetland and associated areas, not simply habitat of rare or endangered species. Please note, then, that this project does not restore habitat critical to the health of our metropolitan area. Rather, it destroys it.
Memorial Drive here, now, is indisputably habitat to hawks, small mammals, waterfowl and other birds, including migrants. Its mature trees and woody and herbaceous plants from the river to its northern side provide food and shelter for them. The plants beauty and shade constitute human habitat essential for our physical, mental, and spiritual re-creation. Their photosynthesis sequesters carbon from passing cars and improves the air for all.
The trees and smaller plants along the shore and banks also prevent erosion. One, Amorpha fruticosa, is used elsewhere in the United States for the erosion control that is central to water quality here as well. The discussion of this plant at 3.3 Invasive Species is more than disturbing. A. fruticosa holds the bank for free. The DCR will eradicate it. Resprouts from the deep-growing roots that make it so valuable for erosion control will be treated with Rodeo. On its face this plan is contrary to the WPA."

"The DCR is not content with stewardship of a mature landscape on the Charles. It is hungry for projects to serve its own bureaucratic needs and its design-development constituents. It will devour that landscape to get a project, as here."
Estimates of $6 to $8 millions of taxpayers money will be wasted on this wanton destruction of habitat. It is ironic, considering that the DCR recently cried poor when they abruptly closed 21 of 27 public swimming pools around the state in Mid August, in the midst of a hot humid heat wave. The pools shut down were in Lowell, Lawrence, Everett, Somerville, Brighton, Brocton, Worchester, Springfield, So Hadley, among others. |

Ionakana Kamalani Pascual, six years old, did his first triathlon billed as The World's Shortest Triathlon ever (100 yard swim, 2.5 mile bike, and 2.1 mile run. It was held last April 18, 2009 in Emeryville of Pixar fame.
It was a fun event that was a first for many of the athletes. I overheard some adults saying they were anxious about their first tri. It took a lot of courage for a little six year old to do one. He had lost of fun.
He doesn't have to do triathlons like Dad but I would be happy if he chooses to continue with it. What I would work for are the times that we can spend swimming, biking, and running in Napa and in different parts of the world.
I asked Iona a week before the event if he wanted to do the tri. He obliged after hearing the distances for each leg and being the "shortest tri ever". He is a fit kid who swims with the Napa Valley Swim Team four times a week and Tae Kwon Do with Napa Valley Martial Arts three times a week. So swimming was easy but biking and running was a challenge since he has not biked or ran more than a mile. We are very proud of his personal achievement.

As a Pararescueman in Iraq, David Broyles's job was to save lives and help those in need, and after leaving the military in 2005, he wanted to continue that mission. He soon found a charity that provided assistance to severely wounded and disabled veterans, the same men and women David had been tasked with rescuing in Iraq. To raise funds and awareness for their needs through the charity, he wanted a tough challenge in their honor, something worthy and symbolic of their struggles and sacrifice. David soon discovered that fewer Americans had swum across the Strait of Gibraltar, from Spain to Africa, than had reached the top of Mount Everest. |

With history about to slip away and Michael Phelps cheering him on, Jason Lezak pulled up next to the lane rope and set out after hulking Alain Bernard, like a NASCAR driver drafting down the backstretch at Daytona.
Only 25 meters to go, half the length of the pool. Every stroke brought Lezak a little closer, a little closer, a little closer, his body seemingly carried along by the Frenchman's massive wake. The two lunged for the wall together. When the result flashed on the board, Phelps was still on course for his record eight gold medals.
By a fingertip.
Lezak, the oldest man on the U.S. swimming team, pulled off one of the great comebacks in Olympic history Monday morning, hitting the wall just ahead of Bernard in the 400 freestyle relay, a race so fast it actually erased two world records.
Few sporting events live up to the hype -- this one exceeded it. The 32-year-old Lezak was nearly a body length behind Bernard as they made the final turn, but the American hugged the lane rope and stunningly overtook him on the very last stroke.
